What is a charter school?
Charter schools:
- are public schools that are operated independently of the local board of education and that are managed by a board of trustees;
- are free to create unique academic programs and school cultures;
- create small school environments able to address student and family needs;
- provide students with the individual attention and support they need to grow into well-educated, self-directed young adults;
- encourage and support parent involvement;
- are accountable to the community and the families they serve for the quality and effectiveness of their school design;
- provide students, families, and teaching professionals with a choice in public education.
